About the Edexcel IGCSE English Language (Specification A) Syllabus

The Edexcel IGCSE English Language (Spec A) course is taught in private schools in the UK and international schools. It is a test of reading and written English. The students are given a number of texts to read and answer questions on; the Reading Section questions are different to those of the past as they test the students not only on what the text is about but also on how it has been written. There is a choice of questions on writing in an imaginative and transactional style, such as a formal letter or speech. There are two examination papers, but the second paper can be done as coursework; Paper 1 is worth 60% of the overall mark and Paper 2 (either as an exam or as coursework) is worth 40% of the overall mark.

The question papers and mark schemes are constructed around 5 Assessment Objectives (AOs). They are what the student is being tested and marked on in the examinations (and coursework). In order to achieve the highest marks, it is essential for the student to know what they are being tested on, so they can answer correctly.

Both examinations and the coursework element consist of a Reading and a Writing Section and both of these sections are equally weighted. Paper 1 comprises a reading test of an ‘unseen’ non-fiction text and a prepared non-fiction text from Section A of the Edexcel anthology.  (There are 10 articles of non-fiction in the anthology to be prepared with a teacher before the Paper 1 exam; one will appear on the exam paper as part of the test. In contrast, the ‘unseen’ has not been prepared with a teacher before the examination.) This is followed by a choice of questions on transactional writing, such as a formal letter or speech. Paper 2 comprises a reading test on a prepared fiction text from Section B of the Edexcel anthology, followed by a choice of questions on imaginative writing, such as a story. (There are 10 fiction texts to prepare before the Paper 2 exam and one will appear on the exam paper as part of the test.)

The coursework element, which can be opted for instead of sitting Paper 2 as an examination, comprises a piece of imaginative writing, such as a story or a description,  and an essay on two of the fiction texts from Section B of the Edexcel anthology. This must be accompanied by a short Commentary, worth 6 marks, about why these two texts were selected.

The Paper 1 examination lasts for 2 hours and 15 minutes. For Paper 1, Edexcel recommends that the student spends one hour and 30 minutes (including 15 minutes reading time) on the Reading Section and 45 minutes on the Writing Section. Paper 2 lasts for one hour and 30 minutes; Edexcel recommends students spend 45 minutes on the Reading Section (including reading time) and 45 minutes on the Writing Section. Students are given a copy of the anthology text in both examinations.

On Paper 1, the Reading Section tests AOs 1-3 and the Writing Section tests AOs 4 and 5. On Paper 2, the Reading Section tests AOs 1 and 2, and the Writing Section tests AOs 4 and 5. Likewise, for the coursework element, the essay and Commentary on the fiction texts tests AOs 1 and 2, and the piece of imaginative writing tests AOs 4 and 5.
